Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
